Hail damage can be expensive. Whether it’s your car, windows or roof, the maintenance adds up! Hail damage on a roof takes a trained eye to spot and can be hard to detect. That’s why us at Five Points Roofing are here to tell you what to look for after a hailstorm. It is very important that your roof stays in pristine condition as damage can cause structural deterioration that may ultimately lead to leaks.

It’s important to remember that the effects of hail damage can differ depending on the size of the hail, wind speed and the current shape of your roof. Here’s what to look for when you are assessing your roof for harm from hail.

First, you want to examine the metal on your roof. This could be anything from roof vents, flashing or metal valleys on the top of your house. Most of these surfaces will display dents if damaged and the size of the dent can indicate the size of the hail that fell.

Another tip is to check the ridge cap of the roof for dents. The ridge caps are designed to fit the ridges of roofs and are typically thicker than other shingles on the roof. Ridge caps are a good indicator of damage and usually receive the most damage from a storm through direct hits.

Now for the shingles. The three major signs of hail damage include bruising, cracking and granules missing from asphalt. Missing pieces in the asphalt on shingles are obvious because a patch of black substrate will be exposed. This means your roof has been damaged by something. You also will want to search for bruising – sometimes, this is not always visible. If harmed, you can detect bruises by running your hands over the shingles in search of a small dimple. When found, press the dimple to see if there is any give. If there is, then this is a sign of deterioration. If the hail hits hard enough or with a strong wind, there could also be cracks in the shingles. Look for this as it is a big sign of hail damage.

Now that you know what to look for, you can start searching for signs of damage on your property after a hailstorm! Plus, we are always here to help. Call or visit us if you have any questions or need a professional sent to your house.
