Questions to Ask Your Roofing Contractor

Do you have questions about our local roofing company? Find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below.

1. Does your roofing company have a general contractor’s license?

At Five Points Roofing Company, we are dedicated to providing homeowners with exceptional metal and shingle roofing services in Middle Tennessee. which is why we hold a general contractor’s license, even though it is not required by the state. To ensure that you pay for reliable roofing services, we recommend working with a company that has a general contractor’s license. You can verify this by asking to see a copy of the license to confirm it is valid and not just a business or home improvement license.

2. Do your roofers have workman’s compensation insurance?

Yes, hiring a roofing contractor without workman’s compensation insurance is extremely risky. If an installer gets injured on your property and does not have workman’s compensation insurance, you could be responsible for any medical bills. Before hiring a local roofer, always ask to see their certificate of insurance and take the time to verify that it is valid.

3. Do you provide roofers with general liability insurance?

Using a roofing contractor without general liability insurance is also a huge risk. Say something happens to your property (or your neighbors’ property) during a service, and the contractor does not have general liability insurance. You may be held accountable for repairing or replacing the property. Keep in mind that workman’s compensation and general liability insurance are two different policies, so make sure your roofing contractor has both. Our local roofers are fully insured. 

4. Is your roofing company local to Middle Tennessee?

Five Points Roofing Company is based out of Franklin, TN. We also serve the Nashville, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, and Spring Hill areas, and can travel anywhere else in Middle TN. We suggest hiring a local roofing contractor for multiple reasons. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen, but what if you have a warranty claim after your roof is installed? Imagine how difficult it would be to track down your roofer when they’re no longer in your area. Also, a lot of out-of-town roofing contractors use a P.O. box or temporary home address, so we recommend hiring a roofing company with a local, physical address that you can visit if needed.

5. Is your roofing company accredited by the Better Business Bureau?

Yes! You can check to see if your roofing contractor is accredited by the Better Business Bureau by verifying their status online. Some roofing contractors falsely use the BBB logo or have an expired accreditation. 

6. Will you send a dedicated project manager to my jobsite?

Some roofing contractors do not provide project managers, who are certified installers assigned to make sure your roof is installed properly, your property and landscaping are protected, and your jobsite is thoroughly cleaned while remaining a direct point of communication. Five Points Roofing Company sends project managers to each jobsite. 

7. How long will my roofing service take?

Make sure to ask this question before you sign a contract, and always get the answer in writing. The average home roofing job should be completed in one day. It is important to make sure that your roofing contractor agrees to complete your job in a timely manner to minimize inconvenience and to make sure your home is not vulnerable to inclement weather.

8. Do you offer any warranties?

We provide two types of warranties: a manufacturer’s warranty and roofing contractor’s workmanship warranty. The manufacturer’s warranty is a certificate from the shingle manufacturer stating their level of coverage if there happens to be a defect. Make sure to read the fine print since these warranties are usually prorated after 10- 15 years and sometimes do not cover labor. Manufacturing defects aren’t common, so this is not the most important warranty to evaluate. Note that the manufacturer’s warranty can be voided if shingles are not installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications. 

The roofing contractor’s workmanship warranty covers poor installation techniques that cause leaking. It is the most important of the two because it covers issues that are far more common. If you are not happy with your roof installation, the roofing contractor will come back and make the repairs, not the shingle manufacturer.

Some additional questions to ask your roofing company:

  1. Have you been certified by the shingle manufacturer?
  2. What kind of nails do you use, and how many per shingle?
  3. Do you use a dedicated starter shingle on the eaves and rakes?
  4. Do you use ice and water shields in the valleys and around roof penetrations?
  5. Will the materials be delivered before the job starts or be left after the job is completed?
  6. Will you drive in my yard?
  7. Do you require any payment before the job starts?
